The Mountain Agenda is an informal group of people with professional interests in sustainable mountain development, drawn from the academic and development cooperation communities. The group was created prior to the Rio Earth Summit (UN Conference on Environment and Development, 1992) to enhance the position of mountains on the global environmental agenda.
In pursuing this aim, the Mountain Agenda publishes the brochure “Mountains of the World” on an annual basis. The purpose of the brochure is to help sensitize policymakers and the general public to issues pertaining to sustainable mountain development and to inform them about the crucial roles of the world's mountains in global development. The brochure is published on the occasion of the annual conference of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD). Funds are provided by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).
